August 24th – 26th 2018 marks Major League Baseball’s second annual Player’s Weekend where teams wear special jerseys with the players being allowed to choose the nickname they have on the back of their jersey.
There are always a good amount of creative nicknames and here is my lineup of the best ones. All 2018 MLB Players’ Weekend Nicknames
SP: Not Justin – Shane Bieber (Cleveland Indians)
RP: 📦🍔 – Brad Boxberger (Arizona Diamondbacks)
C: PTBNL – Josh Phegley (Oakland Athletics)
Phegley, fits the bill of a Player to Be Named Later perfectly as a backup catcher who came to Oakland as a throwaway player in a trade, isn’t afraid to poke fun at himself here.
1B: In Flanders Fields – Joey Votto (Cincinnati Reds)
Votto chose to put In Flanders Fields above his No. 19. It’s the title of a 1915 Canadian poem written by a military doctor named John McCrae during World War I. “I thought about this last year,” said Votto, a native of Toronto. “Last year being the first year we did Players’ Weekend, I didn’t realize the freedom we had. I just felt like last year, I had fun with it, but this year, I wanted to do something that had more meaning.”
2B: Logie Bear – Logan Forsythe (Minnesota Twins)
3B: Mayor-DDC – Travis Shaw (Milwaukee Brewers)
The moniker was originated and applied to Shaw by Barstool Sports Red Sox writer Jared Carrabis early last season. Carrabis’ friend Nick called home runs “ding dongs” and began to call Carrabis the Mayor of Ding Dong City, a name Carrabis felt fit Shaw perfectly.
SS: I Am Groot – Carlos Correa (Houston Astros)
Correa’s puppy’s name is Groot.
OF: Underpants – Hunter Pence (San Francisco Giants)
Underpants, is what Hunter Pence’s name sounds like when you say it really fast.
OF: Sabanero Soy – Ronald Acuna Jr. (Atlanta Braves)
Acuna Jr. will recognize his hometown of La Sabana, Venezuela, by placing “Sabanero Soy” on the back of his jersey. This essentially translates to “I am Sabanero”.
OF: Game Ender – Ender Inciarte (Atlanta Braves)
DH: Pico De Gallo – Joey Gallo (Texas Rangers)
Honorable Mentions: “Ferris” – Walker Buehler (Los Angeles Dodgers), “Yazmanian Devil” – Yasmani Grandal (Los Angeles Dodgers), “Stringbean Slinger” Carl Edwards Jr. (Chicago Cubs), “Brotein Shake” – Brad Hand (Cleveland Indians), “The Big Bear” – Marcell Ozuna (St. Louis Cardinals), “Jarlin The Marlin” – Jarlin Garcia (Miami Marlins), “Jer-ry Jer-ry Jer-ry” – Jerry Blevins (New York Mets)
